Personal Development Task: Get some rest :)
Your body and mind need to rest. Sacrificing sleep will give you more time, but you'll be much less effective. Sleeping 7-8 hours a day should be a priority for both your success and health! Yes there will be times where you need to sacrifice a few hours of sleep, but don't let it become a habit.
Personal Development Task: Get some rest :)
The most powerful thing that we can do with our time is give it to a good cause. We too often focus solely on out own priorities and forget to lend a helping hand to those in need. Servant leadership is one of the most rewarding experiences for both those being helped and the person providing the aid. In order to leave any type of legacy you must understand that life is about something greater than your personal success!
Personal Development Task: Create a list of 3 organizations or groups that you want to focus on giving back to.
Family is the most important thing we have! However, when we are focused on success we often let our work priorities get in the way. We get distracted by our dreams and take our families for granted. Family time is key to happiness and success will not be very sweet if you don't have time to celebrate it with those that you love most!
Personal Development Task: List 3 things that you've always wanted to do with (or for) your family, but haven't made the time to plan it.
Do you know what you are going to accomplish throughout the day when you wake up? If not you may want to take a few minutes to plan out your day. Which priorities are you going to focus and how are you going to make it and effective day? Without a plan the distractions will prevail and by then end of the night you more than likely will not have made much progress towards your dreams. Make sure to plan for today and for the long term!
Personal Development Task: Make a list of 2 things that you want to accomplish today and 1 that you need to accomplish before the end of the year.
"Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe." - Abraham Lincoln
So you've listed your priorities and know what distractions you need to start avoiding, but it may not be enough. You also need to make sure that the time that you focus on your priorities is effective! In order to truly succeed in the priority areas you must be able to devote enough time to each one. It's great if health & fitness is a priority of yours, but if you are spending 30 minutes driving to and from the gym each way and completing 1 hour of exercise and not getting results... then you have a huge problem. There is no "fix-all" solution, but being aware of your effectiveness (or lack of) is a big step.

Everyday there are hundreds of things fighting for our attention. We often get caught in the "whirlwind" spending our days completing tasks that don't have much impact on the achievement of our dreams. At times it can be even worse and we get caught up in activities that are detrimental to our goals. In order to focus on our priorities and make significant progress towards living out our dreams we must learn to leave the distractions behind! If it's not helping you live the life that you strive for... then drop it!
Personal Development Task:
Create a list of your top 5 distractions and post it in the comments below. Don't worry you don't have to drop them today... the list is just to help you become aware of the things that may be distracting you from your dreams (be honest)! I've posted my list in the comments.
You can't manage time. We all have the same amount. You can't get a 25 hr day. However, you can manage what you focus your time on. The key to "Time Management" is understanding your priorities. So let's call it "Priority Management." In order to succeed you must have clear priorities and take small actions towards them every day. If you stay committed and consistent, over time, you will make very significant achievements in those areas.
Personal Development Task:
Create a list of your top 5 priorities and post it in the comments below. I've posted my list in the comments.
How long does a recruiter look at a resume? It might shock you to know that it could be less than 7 seconds! Here are some things that you must have if you want your resume review to last for longer than 7 seconds!
GPA... I personally do not believe it's the best measure of a candidates abilities. However, it is the easiest way for employers to scale down the applicant pool. In general 3.0 is the magic number, but some employers may have an even higher standard. In most situations a 3.0 or above and you'll be given a shot. Less than 3.0 and it will be an uphill battle if you are even given considered. Do yourself a favor and aim for the 4.0! It will make life much easier at job search time. If your GPA is not where you want it to be then raising it should be a top priority. In the meantime learn how to "sell" your skills in the next two areas that recruiters will be looking for..
Relevant Work Experience:
Internships, co-ops, research... do them! Previous relevant work experience is a must now a days! Most employers will utilize behavioral questions in an interview. Answers from relevant internship, co-op, or research project will be great examples of how you will handle tough situations at the employer that you are interviewing with.
"But how do I get experience if you require experience to give me experience??" In the case that you do not have relevant work experience you must leverage the last area that recruiters will be looking for..
Leadership is what will separate you from the rest! Everyone has a GPA, and most strong candidates will have relevant work experience. Your leadership experience is reveals your passions and is your chance to separate yourself from the rest! It's also one of the most sought after qualities in candidates because organizations rise and fall on leadership! Employers want to know that you'll be able to excel in your entry level job and beyond! They want to find the future leaders of the organization!
Got all 3? So you're set, right? Not necessarily... Remember that the job search is all about relationship building. You need to be able to connect with a recruiter for them to see the value that you will bring to the company. A resume a just a piece of paper. It's your job to make sure that you tell your story effectively and show that you are truly a "good fit." Don't forget to connect!

When looking at some of the major problems that the world is facing we tend to be scared away from looking for solutions because the problem is just too big for one person to solve. Most people look at their lives through the lens of their needs and their capabilities. We rarely live our lives with a purpose greater than ourselves and not very many people take on challenges that they can't handle alone...
If your goals in life are reachable without the assistance of others... then you're not truly living. Success, purpose, and even money are the result of serving others and making their world a better place. What the world needs is more people that are willing to step up and say yea, it's crazy... but we are going to start taking some steps and together we will get there!
When the founder of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) Rod Garcia began the organization 40 years ago he didn't know how many lives his decision would change. All he knew was that together that if we brought a network together we would be stronger. Now the organization has impacted the lives of thousands and is growing every day! He took the first step for us and now there are over 300 chapters across the US and Puerto Rico that are all aligned with a mission to "changes lives by empowering the Hispanic community to realize its fullest potential and to impact the world through STEM awareness, access, support and development." Uplifting an entire community and encouraging them to obtain a STEM education is a herculean task, but if we all do a little lifting we can have a tremendous impact! As leaders it's our job to help guide resources to the lift and motivate others to join the effort. We must share our stories and help others craft theirs!
A leader helps dissect a journey of a thousand miles into single steps.
We have more resources within our reach than ever. Social media outlets like Youtube, Facebook, and LinkedIn are making it easier for leaders to share their mission and vision with larger audiences. We just need to be bold enough to take the first step and get the ball rolling so that we can create a "snowball effect." This week many chapters in SHPE's Region 7 had kick-off meetings with "standing room only!" Chapter leaders have leveraged social media, their networks, and the power of SHPE's mission to attract hundreds of potential leaders to the organization. Every member that we engage is a potential life changed. They then become a potential life changing agent thus amplifying the efforts of the chapter. You just have to show them how to take the first steps and then equip them with the tools for the rest of the journey
So you've filled the room. What's next? In order to reach the full potential of your organization you must provide opportunities for leadership (not necessarily leadership positions) to everyone in that room. Empower each member with the resources and motivation to be a living example of the mission and to then pay it forward every day. The mission of your organization should never sleep and neither should your recruiting efforts or impact. How do you do that? PASSION. Spark a passion for your mission in those that you recruit and they will begin to live and share the mission. When your team is fueled by the same passion you then transform into a Familia. Familia never gives up on each other... It's not over until we win! We have a long way to go, but thousands of us are taking the necessary steps together! Keep changing lives my friends!
